Open angle glaucoma Flashcards
define glaucoma
optic nerve damage caused by rise of intraocular pressure due to blockage of aqueous humour
aqueous humour is produced by
ciliary body
normal intraocular pressure is
10-21 mmHg
underlying pathophysiology of open-angle glaucoma
gradual increase in resistance to humerous through trabecular meshwork –> slow & chronic build up of pressure
RFs open angle glaucoma
- increasing age
- family history
- black ethnic origin
- nearsightedness (myopia)
distinctive presentations of open-angle glaucoma
- vision loss, peripheral first –> tunnel vision
- cupping
gold standard method of measuring intraocular pressure
Goldmann applanation tonometry
ix used to estimate intraocular pressure
non-contact tonometry
optic disc can be checked for with
fundoscopy
pressure higher than … should be treated
24 mmHg
1st line tx open-angle glaucoma that increases uveoscleral outflow
latanoprost: prostaglandin analogue eye drops
side effects latanoprost
- eyelash growth
- eyelid pigmentation
- iris pigmentation (browning)
a beta blocker that reduces the production of humour
timolol
carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that reduces the production of humour
dorzolamide
sympathomimetic that reduce humoral production and increases uveoscleral outflow
brimonidine
