one nation conservatism Flashcards
one nation conservatism emerged in the mid to late 19th century in response to the
societal changes brought about by industrialisation as well as the growing appeal of socialism in the working class
represented a strategic and philosophical adaptation of traditional conservative values to the realities of a changing society , Disraeli and his followers recognonsied
the need for conservatism to embrace reform in order to conserve
they understood that in the context of growing urbanisation and the inequalities created bye industrial capitalism it was necessary to address
the grievances of the working and lower classes , otherwise support for socialism would grow threatening a revolution
this approach was justified through paternalism , encapsulating the idea of “ noblesse oblige “ which set out that
the upper classes had a moral repsonsibilty to look after the well-being of those less fortunate
the notion of “ noblesse oblige “ led to police’s aimed at improving living and working conditions for the Lowes classes an acknowledgement that
health of the entire nation was interconnected
one nation cons also emphasised patriotism and the ideas of a cohesive society by supporting the idea that
everyone was together in one nation
Disraeli believed that emphasisng national unity and shared values was essential to counter
the class divisions and conflict stoked by socialist ideologies
by promoting a sense of shared nation identity one nations cons aimed to bridge the
growing divide between classes uniting society around common goals and values
this approach was strategic means to preserve the key principles of traditional conservatism including
the respect for tradition and social hierarchy
by adapting to the changes brought about by industrialisation and the emerging social and political changes one nation cons sought to ensure
the continuity and relevance of conservatism in a rapidly evolving society
in the 19th century disraelis government enacted a number of social reforms aimed at improving
living conditions for the working class
the public health act of 1875 improved
public health
the factory act of 1874 reduced the working day for women and children and implemented
stricter safety regulations in factories
Disraeli also introduced income tac as a permanent tax for the first time in order to give
the government a steady source of revenue
disraelis tax was not progressive though and its important not to over exaggerate the extent
of one nations support for government intervention in this period
- did not support intervention anywhere near as much as modern libs or socialists
