key thinker for one nation tho
Disraeli was an important conservative PM and a key figure in the emergence of one nation con in the
19th century
one nation Vons represented a strategic and philosophical adaptation of traditional con values to the realities of a
industrialised changing society
Disraeli and his followers recognised the need for conservatism to
embrace reform in order to conserve
Disraeli argued that in the context of growing urbanisation and the inequalities created by industrial capitalism it was necessary to
dress the grievances of the working and lower classes
otherwise he recognised that support for
socialism would grow , threatening a revolution and societal order and hierarchy being upturned
Disraeli strongly supported paternalism the beleif that
it is the responsibility of the state and the upper classes to safeguard and look after the welfare of the less privileged in society who are unable to look after themselves
this paternalistic approach is rooted in a sense of moral duty as articulated in the concept of noblesse oblige , this principle embodies the belief that
those in privileged positions have a duty to act with generosity and responsibility towards those less fortunate
this leads to a governance approach where the state takes proactive steps to improve the welfare of the less privlegeded , Disraeli did this by implementing
the public health act of 1875 and the artisans and labourers dwellings improvement act of 1875 which improved public health and sanitary conditions in towns and cities
Disraeli also stated in the commons in 1845
” the health of the people is really the foundation upon which all their happiness and all their powers as a state depend “
disraelis shift to one nation conservatism and support for paternalism was not just due to a belief in moral duty but also a pragmatic strategy to
uphold and maintain order, hierarchy and the position of the aristocracy , changing to conserve
he recognised those near the bottom of the social hierarchy experienced increasingly difficult livining conditions due to industrialisation , if they weren’t looked somewhat it would increase the
likelihood of societal upheaval and potentially revolution which would overturn the established hierarchy
Disraeli made this view clear when he wrote
” the palace is not safe when the cottage isn’t happy “
Disraeli also emphasised patriotism and the idea of a cohesive society by supporting the idea that
everyone was together in one nation
