One Child Policy Flashcards
Two advantages
Altered perception of women in Chinese society
More girls enrolled in schools, as before boys were usually given these educational opportunities
Better quality of life
With only one child, parents can afford better schools, commodities etc. Without having to sacrifice something else
Two disadvantages
Due to the lack of babies, the retiring population is only increasing, but the number of workers paying for pensions is decreasing too. This will lead to an inability to cover these pensions.
The one child policy has also lead to a gender imbalance, as many people illegally found out their child’s gender before it was born, often aborting or abandoning them (after birth). There are many orphaned girls due to this, as well as many unmarried men, which could lead to violence, aggravation. Again, this lowers the birth rate because there are less females and males married, and able to have children.
