Migrated to cities like Manchester
Surge in population, Irishmen came to Manchester to escape potato famine
By 1853 , pop over 300,000
Named a city by queen Vicky
Decline in population in 20th century
Cloth main industry, 1950 onwards other countries making cloth but for less
Manchester’s factories couldn’t compete and closed down
High levels unemployment
Crime rates high, ugly and polluted
People moved away to other towns + cities for work
Regeneration
IRA bomb destroyed city centre (clean slate)
2002 hosted commonwealth games , high profile
- old factories renovated into cafes houses and cultural spaces and shops , I.e Ancoats district now very trendy
Shiny skyscrapers eg Beetham Tower
