Vesicant precautions

Cervical cancer
Main Sx?
Painless, vaginal bleeding
Hysterectomy positioning
Avoid high fowlers due to blood pooling in the abdomen–> pressure on the suture line
Best to ambulate
Breast cancer surgery complications
Hemorrhage (check for pooling of blood on back)
Lymphedema (encourage pt to walk wall with hands, brush own hair, etc)
Bronchoscope with lung cancer, respiratory depression?
Abnormal! Report to phys. Immediately
Lobectomy or pnuemonectomy positioning
Never completely on side, will cause mediastinal shift.
Laryngectomy post op concerns
Will have a permanent trach
NG feeding to avoid peristalsis of the the esophagus(stress on suture line).
Carotid artery rupture.
Frequent oral care (prevent infection)
If trach comes out, replace it, even if dirty, better to have an infected airway than no airway at all.
Stomach cancer- gastrectomy complications
Without stomach, there is no intrinsic factor–> cannot absorb B12–> poorly developed RBCs–> pernicious anemia
