Neuro Flashcards
MRI
Contradindications
No pacemaker, no jewelery
No old tattoos that may have lead in them
Pulse pressure widens with…
ICP
Cerebral angiography
Basics
Major complication?
Uses dye, pt. Will feel flush, have metallic taste in mouth. Iodine based dye.
Embolus–
EEG
Cannot not have____ pre-procedure?
Caffiene
Sedatives.
Do NOT make them NPO.
Lumbar puncture
Side effects?
Headache that increases when the pt. sits up due to losing CSF. Treated with rest, blood patch(blood drawn from arm and placed into puncture to seal it.)
Epidural hematoma
S/Sx
Emergency situation!!
Loss of consciousness, recovery period, can no longer compensate–> neurological changes as ICP increases (0-15mm Hg)
How can you tell CSF from other fluids?
Sugary, high in glucose.
Halo test– CSF will settle on the outside of the other fluids.
Increased ICP
Tx
Mannitol (large molecules, pulls fluid from brain cells into blood) usually given with Furosimide to diurese the now increased fluids in blood.
Hyperventilation- brain vasoconstriction
Fluid restriction
Glasgow scale
If less than___, intubate.
Less than 8, intubate
Normal ICP?
<15
Myasthenia gravis
Weakening of muscle control
Edrophonium
Given to distinguish between MG exacerbation and cholinergic crisis. If it is a cholinergic crisis, then Sx will temporarily worsen.
