Sartorius
O: ASIS
I: Upper medial surface of shaft of tibia
N: Femoral nerve L2,L3
A: Flex, Abducts, ER thigh at hip joint
Iliacus
O: Iliac fossa of hip bone
I: With Psoas into lesser trochanter of femur
N: Femoral nerve L2,L3
A: Flexes thigh on trunk, if thigh is fixed flexes the trunk on thigh as in sitting up from lying down
Psoas
O: Transverse process, bodies, IV disc of the 12th thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae
I: With Iliacus into the lesser trochanter of femur
N: Lumbar Plexus L1, L2, L3
A: Same as Iliacus
Pectineus
O: Superior Pubic Ramos
I: Upper end of linea aspera of shaft of femur
N: Femoral nerve L2,L3
A: Flexes and adducts thigh at hip jt.
Quadriceps femoris
Common I,N,A
I: Quadriceps tendon into patella, then via ligamentum patellae into tubercle of tibia
N: Femoral nerve L2,L3, L4
A: Extension of leg at knee joint
Rectus femoris
O: Straight head - AIIS
Reflected head - ilium above acetabulum
A: Flexes thigh at hip jt.
Vastus Lateralis
O: Upper end of shaft of femur
Vastus Medialis
O: Upper end and shaft of femur
A: Stabilizes patella
Vastus intermedius
O: Anterior and Lateral surface of shaft of femur
A: Articularis genus retracts synovial membrane
Contents of medial fascia
Muscles: Gracilis, Adductor longus, Adductor brevis, Adductor magnus, and obturator externus
Blood Supply: Profunda femoris artery and obturator artery
N: Obturator nerve
Gracilis
O: Inferior ramus of pubis, ramus of ischium
I: Upper part of shaft of tibia on medial side
N: Obturator nerve L2,L3
A: Adducts thigh at hip joint, Flexes leg at knee jt.
Adductor longus
O: Body of pubis, medial to pubic tubercle
I: Posterior Surface of shaft of femur (linea aspera)
N: Obturator nerve L2,L3,L4
A: Adducts thigh at hip joint, and assist in ER
Adductor Brevis
O: Inferior ramus of pubis
I: Posterior surface of shaft of femur (linear aspera)
N: Obturator nerve L2,L3,L4
A: Adducts thigh at hip joint, and assist in ER
Adductor Magnus
O: Inferior ramus of pubis, Ischial tuberosity, and ramus of ischium
I: Posterior surface of shaft of femur, adductor tubercle
N: Obturator nerve - adductor portion,
Sciatic nerve - hamstring portion
A: Adducts thigh at hip joint and assists in ER; hamstring portion extends thigh at hip joint
Contents of the Posterior Fascial Compartment of the Thigh
Muscles: Biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and a small part of the adductor magnus (hamstring muscle)
Blood supply: Branches of the profunda femoris artery
Nerve Supply: Sciatic nerve
Biceps femoris
O: Long head - ischial tuberosity
Short head - linea aspera, lateral supracondylar ridge of shaft of femur
I: Head of fibula
N: Long head - tibial portion of sciatic nerve
Short head - common peroneal portion of sciatic nerve
A: Flexes and laterally rotates leg at knee joint, Long head also extends thigh at hip jt.
Semitendinosus
O: Ischial tuberosity
I: Upper part of medial surface of shaft of tibia
N: Tibial portion of sciatic nerve L5, S1, S2
A: Flexes and medially rotates leg at knee jt.; extends thigh at hip jt.
Semimembranosus
O: Ischial tuberosity
I: Medial condyle
N: Tibial portion of sciatic nerve L5, S1, S2
A: Flexes & medially rotates leg at knee jt.; extends thigh at hip jt.
Adductor magnus (hamstring portion)
O: Ischial tuberosity
I: Adductor tubercle
N: Tibial portion of sciatic nerve L2, L3, L4
A: Extends thigh at hip jt.
