Core-Periphery
A
- used within empires
- a concept where the stronger states (core) reap the benefits of wealth and power and the weaker, conquered states (periphery) do not
- periphery supplies wealth to core
- core is the place to look for motives of expansion, glory, economic exploitation
- periphery is the place to look for crucial resistance or collaboration
- examples: Aztec Empire, Mongols

- came to power after the death of his predecessor
- Pilgrimage to Mecca brought west Africa to the forefront of Europe
- brought thousands of men and slaves with him; brought a lot of gold, distributed it along the way, caused inflation in Cairo, Mecca and Medina

- Mansa Musa as most famous King

- winds threw him off course however, and ended up discovering Canary Islands five weeks into journey
