  • a concept where the stronger states (core) reap the benefits of wealth and power and the weaker, conquered states (periphery) do not
  • periphery supplies wealth to core
  • core is the place to look for motives of expansion, glory, economic exploitation
  • periphery is the place to look for crucial resistance or collaboration
  • examples: Aztec Empire, Mongols
