What is the presentation of OCD?
Obsessional thoughts- ideas, images r impulses that are unpleasant, distressing and not willed
Compulsive acts or rituals stereotypical behaviours that are not helpful or enjoyable but repeated
-ofte viewed by patient as pointless, but resisting causes anxiety, or preventing harm to self or others
What are some common obsessional thoughts?
Fear of contamination Need for symmetry or exactness Fear of causing harm to someone Sexual Religious fear of making a mistake
What are some common compulsive acts/rituals?
Hand washing/cleaning
Checking, ordering and arranging
Requesting reassurance
Counting, repeating words
How is OCD diagnosed?
Causes marked distress, are tie consuming (>1 hours/day) or cause interference with life
What is the management of OCD?
- Education, CBT and SSRI
- Increase dose
- Switch antidepressant
- Referral
