What is the presentation of ADHD?
Onset <12yo
Developmentally abnormal inattention:
-easily distracted, forgetful
-organisational difficulties, doesn’t follow instruction well
Hyperactivity:
-on the go, fidgety
-talks excessively
-gets out of chair when sitting expected
Impulsivity present across time and situations:
-thrill seeking behaviour
How is ADHD diagnosed?
Clinically- require collateral history
Causing functional difficulties
What is th management of ADHD?
Stimulant, psychoedication and behavioural therapy
Treat co-existing mental health problems
What are the stimulants used in ADHD?
- Methylphenidate (Ritalin) or amphetamine- stimulants, can cause loss of appetite and insomnia
- Atoxoxetine- non stimulant, 1st line with co-existing anxiety
