What are the overall responsibilities of the OC body?
Acronym: CSI GODAMMIT ME RAPED
Confirm death from doctor or advanced paramedic
Sudden death procedures are to be carried out
In situ, photograph and video the body
Guard and secure the body, samples and any other exhibits
Observations about the body recorded
Details of all medical staff who attended the body recorded
All cultural requirements considered
Moved? Establish if the body has been moved
Maintain the security and continuity of the body as an exhibit at all times
ID - Formal ID procedures to be arranged
Transport the body to the mortuary once OC scene approves
Attend mortuary with OC and 2IC
Make sure to preserve any evidence from the body
Remove any clothing and personal belongings from the body
Arrange for finger prints and palm prints to be taken
Police photographer to be organised for additional photos
Ensure any samples and exhibits are packaged, labeled sealed and secured
Debrief with pathologist and record any findings
Step 1: What do you do when moving the body?
Acronym: SCRATCH CROWE
Sketch the body position, take photos and videos
Consult OC scene about marking the body position
Record all details about the body position, including wounds, clothing and limb position
Assess any health risks associated with moving the body
Take care to secure the head, hands and feet in paper bags, secure with tape
Check to see that clothing hasn’t been contaminated by foreign objects
Have the body wrapped in a plastic sheet then placed in a body bag
Carefully search underneath the body
Retain any bags used for transport as exhibits
Obtain permission from OC scene to move the body
When directed, organise for the contracted undertaker to attend
Ensure the security and continuity of the body as an exhibit is maintained at all times
Step 2: What do you do when you arrive at the mortuary?
Acronym: A BEER
Arrange for formal ID procedures to take place
Body is to remain in its current condition until the post mortem
Ensure that mortuary staff do not wash the body
Ensure that the body is labeled and secured inside a mortuary fridge
Retain the key used to secure the body in the fridge
Step 3: What do you do when you strip a body?
Acronym: RTP RSM
Remove the body from the body bag without disturbing it
Take possession of any sheets, bags, wrappings used and exhibit them
Police photographer should be present to take photos of the entire procedure
Remove any items of clothing from the body
Secure, seal, package, label and items of clothing and any samples separately
Maintain the security and continuity of the body as an exhibit at all times
Step 4: What do you do after the post mortem?
- The pathologist seals any samples/exhibits in the officers presence at the conclusion of the post mortem
- The samples/exhibits are hand to the OC body
- The OC body takes the samples/exhibits away
- The OC body hands the samples/exhibits to the OC exhibits to ensure the continuity of the evidence is maintained
- OC body also hands OC exhibits relevant paper work, such as formal written statements, exhibit schedules, pathologists reports
What is the purpose of a Post Mortem?
Acronym: DEAD PIN
Determine where possible the mode and time of death
Establish how injuries or events contributed to the death
Ascertain the approximate height and stature of suspect
Determine nature and size of weapon (if any used)
Provides further areas of interest for suspect / victim interviews
Identify the Victim (if not already done)
Negate any possible defences
