What are the overall responsibilities of the O/C Exhibits?
Acronym: PEERS DERP 2
Preparing exhibits for production in Court
Ensuring that they are labelled by finder and accompanied by exhibit schedule
Ensuring exhibits are uniquely numbered
Record exhibits in exhibit register and record all exhibit movements
Securing the exhibits
Delivering exhibits for examination + analysis
Ensuring that continuity of evidence is maintained
Receiving the exhibits
Producing relevant exhibits in Court
2-I/C - Consult 2-I/C on relevance of exhibits indicating any further inquiries in relation to any exhibits
How do you ‘Deal with Exhibits’?
Acronym: STOP SCFM
Significance - consider its significance for reconstruction
Touch, do not touch or move it
O/C Scene: Advise them to view it
Photograph it in situ
Sketch it and plot its position on the plan
Consider fingerprints
From a fixed point, measure distances
Mark the position where it was found
How should an exhibit numbering system be?
Acronym: BABE C
The exhibit number system, should be simple, efficient and provide the following attributes:
Be consistent
Allow delegation of exhibit numbers to staff
Be compatible with technology, make the numbers searchable
Encompass all exhibits ie MEK, reference blood samples and photographs sent to ESR
Cope with multiple scenes
What must the O/C Exhibits ensure?
Acronym: CALL C
Correctly preserved exhibits
Assign unique exhibit number from allocated number range
Labelled each exhibit with exhibit number + OP name
Labelled, separately packaged + seal in accordance with SOP’s
Correctly recorded exhibits in exhibit schedule
What are the number ranges?
10000 = 'Admin' 15000 = 'Victim' 20000 = 'Witnesses' 25000 = 'Area Enquiries' 30000 = 'Scenes' 70000 = 'Suspects'
