What is serious child abuse?
Serious physical abuse
Sexual abuse
Victims of serious family violence
Allegations of serious abuse with CYFS caregivers

Wilful neglect
What is serious wilful neglect?
Where a person wilfully neglects a child or allows a child to become ill in a manner which will cause serious bodily harm, mental disorder or disability.
What are the three stages to determine seriousness?
A - Action of the abuse
I - Injuries resulting from the abuse
C - Circumstances surrounding the abuse
What are the three initial steps CYFS and Police are required to follow?
Referral - inter agency communication between CYFS and Police
Consultation -
Agreement - Decisions made about next steps, who does what and what will be put in the JIP.
What topics should you consider on a JIP?
S - Safety of the child
I - Interview, evidential interview of the child, offenders or other relevant people?
J - Joint visits with CYFS and Police
E - Evidence collection
M - Medical examination
What are the CYP time lines?
Critical - Child at risk of serious harm and in immediate danger, immediate action required
Very urgent - Child at risk but not in immediate danger - initial steps taken within 24 hours
Urgent - Child at risk but not in immediate danger, initial steps to be taken within 2 days
What is serious physical abuse?
The actions of an offender that could result in serious physical harm or injury being inflicted on the child
