Obstructive vs Restrictive Lung Disease Flashcards
The differences
Definition of obstructive lung diseaese
Characterised by airflow obstruction, making it difficult to exhale all the air in the lungs
What are some examples of obstructive lung disease?
- COPD
- Asthma
- Bronchiectasis
- Emphysema
What is the mechanism of obstructive lung disease?
Airways become narrowed or blocked, hindering airflow during exhalation
FEV1/FVC Ratio in obstructive lung disease
Reduced
Ratio is lower than 80% in obstructive lung disease
What are some symptoms of obstructive lung disease?
- Difficulty breathing (especially during exhalation)
- Wheezing
- Barrel chest
Definition of restrictive lung disease
Characterised by reduced lung volumes, making it difficult to fully expand the lungs during inhalation
What are some examples of restrictive lung disease?
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Interstitial lung disease
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Obesity
What is the mechanism of restrictive lung disease?
Lung tissue becomes stiff or scarred, limiting lung expansion and reducing the amount of air the lungs can hold
FEV1/FVC Ratio in restrictive lung disease?
Normal or increased
Ratio usually greater than 80%
What are some symptoms of restrictive lung disease?
- SOB
- Rapid, shallow breathing pattern
