when the airway at the back of the throat is sucked closed when breathing in during sleep
why does the airway not get sucked in during the day
it is overcome by the action of opening muscles of the upper airway
what does partial narrowing result in

what does apnoea lead to
hypoxia
what does the hypoxia do to the sleeping patients
wakes them up for a short period of time but too short for the to realise
does the patient have a good night sleep
nope they are constantly tired and have impaired intellectual performance
risk factors
- obesity
- narrow pharyngeal opening
- COPD
symptoms
- loud snoring
- daytime sleepiness
- unrefreshed sleep
- morning headache
- nocturnal choking
- morning drunkenness
- ankle swelling
how to diagnose
overnight pulse oximetry (performed at home)
what is a scale that can be used for sleepiness
Epworth sleepiness scale
how is diagnosis confirmed
if there are more than 10-15 apnoeas in any 1 hour of sleep
treatment
- treat correctable factors
2. nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
