Obstructive Lung Disease Flashcards
What is the pathogenesis of asthma?
Chronic inflammation-> airway narrowing-> airflow limitation
What else happens in asthmatic lungs?
Airway smooth muscle hypertrophy, leukocyte infiltration, goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus hypersecretion
What is the pathology of asthma?
Allergens activate sensitised mast cells by crosslinking surface bound IgE to release mediators leading to bronchoconstriction
What is the Th2 response in asthma?
They release IL4 and IL13 causing B cells to synthesis IgE. IL5 activates eosinophils and IL9 mast cell proliferation
What is non T2 asthma?
Late onset, associated with obesity, smooth muscle mediated, neutrophilic, smoking related
What are the symptoms of asthma?
Cough, dyspnoea, chest pain, allergies
Asthma structured clinical assessment?
Recurrent episodes, symptom variability, recorded wheeze, atopy, PEF FEV
