OBSERVATIONS 2 (EVALUATIONS) Flashcards
Non/ participant observers and overt and covert
1
Q
**
Strengths of particpant observations
A
- Validity: In depth data can be collected as the researcher is in close proximity to the ppts and will be less likely to overlook/ miss any behaviours.
2
Q
Weaknesses of participant observations
A
- Objectivity: Immersion in the groups activities may comprimise the obsevers objectivity, as personal biases may affect interpretation of data.
- Informed consent, deception, protection from harm, privacy (uncomfortable/ exposed)
3
Q
Strengths of non-participant observations
A
- Objectivity: Can be maintained as obsevers are less likely to become emotionally involved, biased as they are detached from the social context.
- Fewer ethical concerns: As they dont directly enage with the ppts.
4
Q
Weaknesses of non-participant observations
A
- Validity: This lack of proximity means the researcher may overlook behaviours of interest, or misinterpret social cues due to a lack of insider perspective and context. (incomplete/ inaccurate observations)
