OBSERVATIONS Flashcards
1
Q
What are observations?
A
- the systematic process of observing, recording and analysing behaviours.
To gain insights and undertand patterns
2
Q
How can observations be used?
A
- As a research method
- A measure/technique used to collect data in other research methods.
3
Q
What type of settings can observations take place?
A
- Naturalistic
- Controlled
4
Q
How is data from observations recorded?
A
- Structured
- Unstructured
5
Q
How can observers be INVOLVED in the observation?
A
- Participant
- Non- Particpant
6
Q
What role can an observer have in an observation?
A
- Overt
- Covert
7
Q
Define what a naturalistic observation is
A
- Conducted in the ppts natural (social or physical) enviroments. There is no interference from the researcher.
8
Q
Controlled observation
A
- Conducted in a situation that has been manipulated by the researchers (social/ physical enviroment)
9
Q
Define a structured observation
A
- The observer only records a limited range of behaviours.
10
Q
Unstructured observation
A
- The observer records the whole range of possible behaviours
11
Q
Behaviour categories
A
- The activities recorded in an experiment.
- Must be operationalised/ must be obervable actions rather than inferred states/ Must break the continous stream of activity into recordable events)
12
Q
Participant observer
A
The researcher is part of the social setting
13
Q
Non- partcipant observer
A
- The researcher does not become involved in the situation that is being studied
14
Q
Overt
A
- The role of the observer is obvious to ppts
15
Q
Covert
A
The role of the observer is NOT obvious (disguised/ CCTV)
