CONTROLLING VARIBLES Flashcards
1
Q
Types of variables
A
- Independent varaible.
- Depedent variable
- Co-variables
2
Q
What is an iv?
A
- The variable under investigation in an experiment.
- That is manipulated and assumed to be responsible for changes in the DV.
3
Q
What is an dv?
A
- The varible that is measured in an experiment.
- And is expected to change due to changes in the IV.
4
Q
What is a co-varible?
A
- 2 varibles which have a relationship and are investigated in a correlation.
5
Q
Define operationalisation
A
- Clearly defining a variable so that it can be accurately measured.
6
Q
What are extraneous varibles?
A
- Any other variable that is not being investigated that can influence the DV.
7
Q
Confounding variable
A
- A type of extraneous varible.
- That acts systematically on one level of the IV.
- That may impact the relationship between the IV and DV
8
Q
Uncontrolled varibles
A
* Any extraneous variable that is not adequatley controlled/ accounted for in the research design
9
Q
Situational variable
A
- A type of confounding variable
- That occurs due to enviromental influences that can affect the dv.
10
Q
Participant variables
A
- Individual differences between ppts that could affect their behaviour in a study.
11
Q
Investigator effects
A
- When a researcher (consciously or unconsciously) acts in a way to support their prediction.
12
Q
Demand charateristics
A
- Cues in the experimental procedure that might indicate the study aims to ppts.
- Which can lead to ppts altering behaviors to match perceived experimenter aims.
(to please the researcher or disrupt the results by doing the opposite of what is perceived to be expected)
