OBSERVATIONS Flashcards
what is observational data
occurs in a natural setting
observational data= field notes
overt vs covert
over= open identity, they know covert= do not know they are be watched or a study is taking place
complete participant
u go into the group pretending to be one of them- covert
participant as observer
more overt- completely involved but they know you are a researcher-
observer as ppts
overt- less involved, more ‘shadowing’- but they know you are researcher- main role is to gather data
complete observer
overt or covert-
‘fly on the wall’- just observation
covert ad overt ethical/methodological considerations
covert- informed consent, deception, privacy
overt- social desirability
what are field notes?
observational notes-who, what, where, when, how
general notes
theoretical notes- interpretations, inferences
methodological notes- timing, sequencing, stage reflection
critical reflection- must reflect on all aspects of field notes as this is your whole data- must capture as much as you can
Diary entries
data collected over time
used when observations aren’t possible
‘view from within’- capture relevant info to ppt (ppt own perspective)
POSITIVE-in-situ- less reliant on memory recall as its a real time accounut.
HOWEVER- u have to rely on ppt engagement and ppts may be less inclined to record accounts that are personal
