grounded theory Flashcards
history of grounded theory
Glazer and Straus - 1960 they had a fall out resulting in 2 types of grounded theory Straus + corbin- added some deductive nature glazer- inductive only
what is grounded theory
a theory developed inductively (bottom-up)
some quant also use this/ mixed methods
from the data you derive theory
theories are ‘grounded’ in the data from which they emerge
against hypothetic-deductive testing
iterative process
involves theoretical sampling
positivism
- so it is systematic- challenging the view that qualitative research is not systemized
- it also generates theory- challenging further issues raised with qualitative research
true grounded theory does not start with a research question- just general questions are used
involves theoretical sampling-sampling ppts who can tell u about a certain topic that has emerged from the data
involves memo writing
grounded theory process-
- data collection and analysis are entwined
- categories emerge from the data
- memo writing
- theoretical sampling
- aim of theoretical saturation
- literature review written after the analysis (high risk- you might find someone else has done the same study and published it—- not very pragmatic)
core components of grounded theory-
- analytic categories- meaningful categories developed as we go through the data (inductive)
- developed whislt studying
- constant comparative analysis, identify, refine, integrate categories to develop theories
- theoretical saturation must occur (data saturation)
what is an in vivo code?
taken from ppts discourse
there exact words
occurs in grounded theory
types of coding- open coding
reducing data into units- provides leads to follow
types of coding- focus coding
integration of categories to produce theories- used to synthesise and explain- first coding in gt
types of coding- axial coding
strauss- identifying relationships between catgeories- second coding inn gt
grounded theory strengths
powerful tool for translating conceptual analysis into theory development
its a systematic procedure which allows us to generate ideas in relation to our research
flexible approach as it is inductive
