Observation Techniques Flashcards
What are the 6 types of observation?
Covert Overt Naturalistic Controlled Participant Non-participant
What is a covert observation?
When ppts are unaware they are being studied
What is an overt observation?
When ppts are aware they are being studied
What is a naturalistic observation?
Takes place in the environment which it would normally
What is a controlled observation?
When some of the variables are controlled
What is a participant observation?
When the observer is part of the group
What is a non-participant observation?
When the researcher is separate and studies the group objectively
What is a requirement for an overt observation to be ethical?
Informed consent
What must happen before a covert observation?
The behaviour must be public AND happening anyway
What is free to vary in a naturalistic observation?
All aspects of the environment
External val. of naturalistic observations?
High
External val. of controlled observations?
Low bc artificial env
How easy to replicate is a naturalistic observation?
Hard
What is an issue in naturalistic observations?
EVs
Positives of covert observation?
No DC
T/F high internal validity
Negatives of covert observation?
Unethical- might be an invasion of privacy
Positives of overt?
Ethical due to informed consent
Negatives of overt?
DC
What is wrong with a participant study?
The researcher is in the group so may lose OBJ.
Why is it good to have the researcher in with the group?
They get an insight into the behaviour of the group so validity increases
What is good about a non-participant study?
The researcher will be able to remain OBJ.
Why might a participant study be preferable over a non-participant study?
Insights into the group
