What are the 4 types of ethical issue
Deception No consent No Privacy (No confidentiality) No Protection from harm
What is deception?
This is when there is a naïve ppt who has been given inadequate information when they have given consent
What is informed consent?
When the ppt has been given information about the experiment before they give consent so they know what they are getting themselves into
What is privacy and confidentiality?
Privacy= the ppts have the right to control info about themselves
Confidentiality= personal data will be protected
What is protection from harm?
No experiment should put the ppt in more harm than they would be in their every day life
(physical OR psychological)
How is deception and protection from harm dealt with?
Debrief
The ppts have the right to withdraw their info
They are provided with counselling if needed
How is informed consent dealt with?
They are given a letter to sign if they agree with the exp
How is confidentiality dealt with?
Numbers or initials are used
No personal data is recorded
What are the 3 types of consent?
Prior general
Retrospective
Presumptive
What is prior general consent?
Ppts give their permission to take part in many different exp.s one of them they will be deceived
What is retrospective consent?
Asked for consent during debrief
What is presumptive consent?
A similar group of ppl to the ppts are asked if it is ok to do the exp.
What is the definition of an ethical issue?
When a conflict exists between the rights of the ppts in research studies and the goals of research to produce authentic, valid data
