Experimental Design Flashcards
What are the 3 types of experimental design?
Matched Pairs
Independent groups
Repeated Measures
What is matched pairs?
One participant from each pair does a variable each
The people in the pair are put together by most and second most X
E.g. most and second most talkative
What is repeated measures?
All participants do every condition
Experiment AND control
What is independent groups?
One group does one condition, the other does the other
Positives of matched pairs?
Less order effects
Less DC
Limits ppt variables
Positives of repeated measures?
Limits ppt variable
Positives of independent groups?
No demand characteristics
Negatives of matched pairs?
No 2 ppl are the same
Negatives of repeated measures?
Order effects
E.g. condition 1 may affect condition 2
Negatives of independent groups?
Ppt variables
They may respond differently to each condition
How are order effects dealt with in repeated measures?
Counterbalancing
Why is counterbalancing used?
To try and stop order effects
Give an example of counterbalancing
PPT1- AB
PPT2-BA
PPT3-AB
ETC
What experimental design does a correlation use?
Doesn’t because nothing is being manipulated
How are the pairs chosen in matched pairs?
Paired by similar traits that are relevant to the study
What are the 3 order effects?
Fatigue
Boredom
