Objective 10 - Muscles of Respiration Flashcards
Primary muscles of respiration
Diaphragm Intercostals (external, internal, innermost, subcostal)
Secondary muscles of respiration
Scalenes Pectoralis minor Serratus anterior Serratus posterior Quadratus lumborum Latissimus dorsi
What nerve innervates the diaphragm?
C3-C5
What is the action of the intercostals?
external: quiet and forced inhalation
internal: forced expiration
What is the action of anterior and middle scalenes?
Sidebend the neck to the same side with unilateral contraction
What is the innervation of the anterior and middle scalenes?
C3-C6
What is the action of pectoralis minor?
Stabilizes the scapula by drawing inferiorly and anteriorly against the thoracic wall
What is the innervation of the pectoralis minor?
medial pectoral nerve (C8, T1)
What syndrome is associated with pectoralis minor?
thoracic outlet syndrome
What is the action of the serratus anterior?
protracts scapula and holds against thoracic wall; rotates scapula
What is the innervation of the serratus anterior?
long thoracic n. (C5-7)
What is the action of serratus posterior superior?
Elevates ribs
What is the action of the serratus posterior inferior?
Depresses ribs
What is the action of the quadratus lumborum?
Extends and laterally flexes the vertebral column; fixes 12th rib during inspiration
What is the innervation of the latissimus dorsi?
Thoracodorsal (C6-8)
