Discuss why obedience training may be beneficial?
A
- Basis for accurate Guide Dog work.
- Leadership.
- To refocus dogs concentration.
- Public image; well behaved.
- Develops respect/bond.
- Prevents unwanted behaviours.
- Handling of dog.

What do we teach clients about ‘control techniques’?
A
- Should always be appropriate to the dogs temperament and appropriate in relation to the situation e.g. ‘Balance of Scales’.
- Vocal commands should always be clear and allow the dog adequate time to respond.
- The Handler should ensure the dog performs the correct response to each command.
- The Handler should provide praise in appropriate circumstances to positively reinforce correct behaviours.
- Timing for corrections and praise is vital.

Why is effective vocal and physical control essential?

- To maintain Leadership.
- To communicate with dog what is acceptable and what is unacceptable.
- To maintain accurate working skills and social behaviour.
