What factors effect the transition and bond of the dog- from the Instructor to the client?

A
  • Personality of client.
  • Temperament of the dog.
  • Bond/respect of dog to client.
  • Level of support the client provides to dog.
  • A smooth transition to client/home.
  • Major changes e.g. weather (e.g. dog living in a very different environment).
  • Acceptance of family/pets etc.
  • The level of input from the Instructor.

A

Respect:

  • Consistent handling.
  • Following through with commands so the dog knows that you mean what you say.
  • Handler in control.
  • Good leadership.
  • Handler is authoritative.

Bond:

  • Affection.

What is the order of priority for matching dogs to clients on the waiting list?

A
  1. Replacement Guide Dog. (GD dies/GD is withdrawn/old etc.) Because client relies on a GD for primary mobility aid.
  2. First time applicant on waitlist.
  3. Applicants with specific needs.

Other factors:

  1. GD’s with specific needs.
  2. Logistics e.g. availability of trainers etc.
  3. Availability of clients e.g. school teacher time off on holidays etc.

Describe the matching procedure.

A
  • Instructor reviews dog records, client assessment notes, medical/ophthal. reports, o&m etc.
  • Consultation with GD Trainer, GD Instructor and manager.
  • GDT describes dog temp., attributes- including strengths and weaknesses.
  • GDI describes client.
  • Temperament, physical and working attributes of dog paired with client.
  • Client contacted, notified of suitable dog, breed, sex, colour. Name of dog not provided yet.
  • Training program chosen; client either accepts or declines.
