O - Acids, pH, PKa (radiation in, radiation out) Flashcards
what type of radiation does the sun emmit?
visable, UV and IR
hoe does the earth warm?
suns radiation is both refected and absorbed by earth
what is absorbed warms the earth and its atmosphere and is then radiated back into space as IR
what happens to the earth as it gets heated?
it emits infrared only (not hot enough to emit VI or UV)
greenhouse effect
what is the GHG effect?
GHGs trap some of the energy that is emmited from the earths surface preventing it from being re-emited inot space = earth warms
e.g CO2, CH4
greenhouse effect
what are the properties of GHGs?
- when they interact with IR their bonds vibrate more vigerously increasing vibrational energy (link to OZ)
- this can be transfered as kinetic energy upon collision with other molecules e.g O2 raising the temp of the air
greenhouse effect
what is the natural importance of CO2 and CH4?
theyre both natural components of the air and without them the earth woulf be too cold for life - ˚˚˚ some GHG is good for balance of the earth
since industrial revolution humand=s have impacted this balance
what is the IR window?
the IR that water doesnt absorb
> H2O only absorbs certain wavelengths of IR
what happens to the IR of the IR window?
it is absorbed by CO2 trapping the radiation
increasing levels of CO2 will increase they amount trappend increasing the greenhouse effect
