DM - Electrochemistry Flashcards
what is a dry cell?
draw diagram
seal
carbon rod terminal
card covering
zinc container terminal - oxidised
mixture of chemicals containing ammonium chloride which accepts the e- - reduced
electric flowing along external wire
what do electrochemical cells do?
get half equations to occur separately as electrons are transferred by external electrical conductor
when is the potential difference between terminals measured?
when no current flows + high resistance volt metre is used
electrical charge: what is charge measured in?
coulomb (C)
electrical charge: what is current?
flow of charge and is measured in (A)
1A = 1Cs-1
electrical charge: what is voltage?
tells number of joules of energy transferred when 1C flows
1V=1JC-1
what are the requirements for making a cell?
solutions need to be electrically connected without mixing
salt bridge is used
electrical charge is carried by ions
circuit is complete by connecting electrodes with copper wires with high resistance volt metre
draw a diagram meeting all the requirements
actually do it
