NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Flashcards
What are nutritional requirements?
Amount of each nutrient you need in your diet
Some people need more nutrients as they absorb/utilise nutrients less efficiently
Reduce diet related diseases
Vary between the individual and life stages (age/body size/sex/levels of activity)
What are DRVs (dietary reference values)
Estimate amount of nutrients needed for a particular group not individuals to ensure adequate intakes of energy/nutrients
Prevents malnutrition
Developed by SCAN (medical committee)
Has 3 types :
EARs
RNIs
LRNIs
What are EARs (estimated average requirements) - type of DRV
Estimate of average requirements for nutrients - 50% of population will need more, 50% will need less of average amount required
EARs show energy needed is higher for boys than girls
Energy - 2000 kcal
Fat - 35% of total food
Carbs - 50% of total food
NSP - 18g per day
What are RNIs (reference nutrient intake) - Type of DRV
Amount of a nutrient that is enough for the majority of the population (97.5%)
Protein - 45g a day
What are LNRIs (Lower reference nutrient intake) - type of DRVs
Amount of nutrient enough for small number of people (2.5%) who have small requirements
Majority of people need more
What are GDA (guideline daily amounts)
Guidelines used on food labels for consumers to follow
Based on average requirements for an adult women (helps consumers to not avoid over consumption)
Aimed at healthy people maintaining a healthy weight
Varies with age/ gender/ level of activity/ weight
