FATS Flashcards
Differences between saturated fat and unsaturated fat?
Saturated fat is solid at room temperature and unsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature
Sources of saturated fat
Animal sources
Meat
Dairy
Fish
Effects of excess saturated fat
High blood cholesterol
Increased risk of heart disease
Diabetes
Obesity
Sources of unsaturated fat
Plants sources
Avocado
Vegetable oil
Olive oil
Sunflower oil
What are essential fatty acids?
Can’t be processed by the body
Omega 3 - protects the heart
(Oily fish/ seeds/ leafy veg)
Omega 6 - lowers cholesterol
(Veg/ fruit/ grains)
Function of fat
Source of energy
Insulation
Effects of deficiency of fat
Babies growth affected
Less insulation - colder
Effects of excess fat
Obesity
Increase risk of liver/health problems
What are lipids
Mixture of triglycerides which consists of one molecule of glycerol combined with 3 fatty acid molecules
General formula for fatty acids
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
RCOOH
Each OH group of glycerol reacts with the -COOH of a fatty acid to form a fat molecule
R represents hydrocarbon chain
