What is the definition of obesity?
An excess of body fat that is sufficient to result in impairment of health or organ function.
How does neutering affect caloric requirements in SAs?
It reduces the amount needed. Therefore feed needs to be adjusted for neutered pets.
Other than reproductive status, what other factor needs to be taken into account in terms of feed adjustment?
Age - older animal has reduced lean body mass
What are some good tips to follow for a successful weight loss program?
- Meal feed rather than ad lib
- Careful measurement of meals
- Diet history
- Food log
- Excercise!

If reducing calories in the diet, what needs to be maintained?

What is the evidence for high protein diets?
No evidence that these are any better than anything else. Bear in mind they can be very high calorie and palatability. Also need to take into account impact on liver and kidneys
If recommending extra exercise, what should one know?
The current level of exercise!
What minerals are present/not present in raw meat?
No calcium and high phosphorus - this type of imbalance can lead to secondary hyperparathyroidism
