Control of Mastitis Flashcards
What is CNS?
Coagulase negative staphylococci. It is a minor pathogen that may cause contagious mastitis.
What are the cells that make up an SCC?
Inflammatory cells and epithelial cells.
What cell count indicates a subclinical infection?
> 200,000/ml
What does bulk tank SCC give an approximate indication of?
The prevalence of mastitis in the herd/proportion of quaters infected.
What are the targets to BMSCC
150,000
Financial penalty > 200,000
EU law <400,000 (human consumption)
What are the priniciples of control of contagious mastitis?
Control spread at milking
Eliminate reservoirs
Outline the 5 point plan for controlling contagious mastitis.
- Prompt detection and treatment of clinical cases
- . Post milking teat dip
- Dry cow therapy
- Cull persistant offenders
- Regular servicing and maintenance of the milking machine
What are the priniciples of detection and treatment of clinical cases at milking time?
Stripping out
Gloves
No udder cloths (individual paper towel wipe)
Pre milking teat dips
How long after milking does the teat orifice remain open?
30-40 mins post milking
What needs to be considered/checked to ensure post milking teat dipping is effective?
Whether coverage of the entire teat is occuring.
What things are done during the dry cow period?
A) LA antibiotic coverage to treat & prevent sub clinical infections
B) Teat sealant
Which cows should be considered for culling?
3 cases or more during lactation
Persistantly high SCC that does not respond to treatment
How else can problem cows be dealt with?
Put them in a problem herd and treat at drying off.
What suction systems are present on a milking machine?
- Constant vacuum at the teat to pull out milk.
2. Pulsation to prevent congestion of the teat.
How often should milk liners probably be changed?
Probably every 100 days!
