What is obesity
When the body contains too much fat
What is true causes of obesity
More energy coming from food that is not used is storred as fat which can lead to obesity
What happens to the body when obese?
Stored fat will build up under skin around abdomen and intestines
Lead to type 2 diabetes
Extra weight can put strain on the heart, liver and kidneys
Visceral fat pushes up on diaphragm squashing the lungs and making it hard to breathe
How can people prevent obesity?
Energy balance and take in less energy
Increase physical activity
What is CHD
Where the coronary arteries become blocked by fatty plaques which prevent blood flowing to the heart
How is CHD caused?
Eating too many saturates
What causes rickets?
Lack of vitamin D meaning not enough
calcium is Absorbed so the bones become weak
What is osteoporosis?
The natural ageing of the bones making them weak
Effects worsen if the bones never reached peak bone mass when the person was younger
What causes tooth decay?
Sugar and starch builds up plaque so bacteria feeds on the plaque turning sugars into acids, the sugar attacks the teeth
How is anaemia caused?
Deficiency of iron in the blood
Why does the body need iron?
To make haemoglobin which carries oxygen around the body producing energy
What are the symptoms of ammonia
Lack of energy Tiredness Pale complexion Weak and rigid finger nails Feeling cold Muscle weakness
