NUTRITION FOR ADULTS (30+) Flashcards
Metabolism gradually starts to slow down →
easier to gain weight and harder to lose weight
Adults who had no trouble maintaining weight as teen will
now find a sudden increase in weight
Once adults enter the workforce
less opportunity to be active
No longer growing - reduced caloric intake;
nutritional needs vary. A young adult will need more of folic acid and iron in their childbearing ages compared to an older adult who would need more calcium
Nutritional Concern:
Higher intake of macronutrients (fat, protein, sugar) and lower intake of micro nutrients and fiber
Imbalance in nutrients
obesity and other health-related concerns (relationship b/w poor diet-obesity-fertility)
Over the last 20 years more adults are spending their food dollars at restaurants than at grocery stores. Why?
Convenient (pick up, no need to make dinner, not everybody gets home at the same time)
Young adults develop and practice skills by preparing meals for their family
Learning to prepare nutritious and flavourful meals on a budget
Learning to ship for variety of safe foods and storing them
Why is it important to know how to prepare meals?
Nutritional value, ingredients, personal taste, portion size
