Nutrients Flashcards
iodine test
add a drop of iodine SOLUTION to the substance, if there is starch it will change to blue black
ethanol test
add 2 cm^3 of ethanol solution to the substance, and shake thoroughly. Add 2 cm^3 of water to the mixture and shake thoroughly again. Observe for emulsification for fats
benedict’s test
heat boiling bath, add equal volume of benedict’s solution and substance, allow test tubes to boil, observe if the tone changes to a shade of red, reduccing sugars
biuret test
add equal volume of sodium hydroxide and substance. add copper sulfate drop by drop for 20 drops and observe if the colour changes from purple to light blue. Proteins
3 functions of the food
energy for activities, converted to protoplasm, keep body healthy.
3 functions of water
solvent for chemical reactions, control body temperature, transport dissolved substances,
3 functions of fats
store of energy, essential part of protoplasm, insulation
3 functions of proteins?
synthesis of new protoplasm, form antibodies, synthesis enzyme and hormones
Reaction where a water molecule is needed to break up a complex molecule
Hydrolysis
Reaction where a water molecule if given to turn a simple substance to a more complex substance
Condensation reaction
Fats broken down
glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acid molecules
Why proteins must be broken down?
because it is too large to pass through the cell surface membrane of a cell
