Chapter 10 excretion Flashcards
What is excretion?
Getting rid of metabolic waste products and toxic substances made by the organism
what do the lungs excrete?
skin
Kidneys
CO2
sweat
urea
What are the functions of a kidney?
Filters blood
Removes excess water and salts and all urea
Help maintain homeostasis
What is filtered out of the blood in the Glomerulus into the cup of the bowman’s capsule?
H2O salts urea glucose amino acids
How do the substances in the renal arteries get into the kidney tubule?
Ultra-filtration
small enough to fit through filter
What remains in the blood and is not filtered out when passing through the glomerulus?
proteins and blood cells
What substances are reabsorbed into the blood after the efferent arteriole and why? and how does this happen?
Some H2O, all glucose, amino acids and some salts because they are useful and needed
This happens via diffusion and active transport,
-Occurring by diffusion, selective re-absorption and osmosis
What is ADH?
ADH controls water content - increases the permeability of the kidney tubules to water
Why is excretion important?
to rid the body of harmful by-products created by its own vital activities
name all the sections of the nephron which absorbs water
proximal convoluted tubule, loop of henle, distal convoluted tubule, collecting duct
