Q

carbon cycle

A

carbon fixed into organic molecules during photosynthesis
(CO2+H20 +SUNLIGHT = C6H1206 + O2)

carbon released during cellular respiration
(C6H12O6 + O2 = CO2 +H2O +ATP+ HEAT)
can also be released by burning of wood and fossil fuels

Q

energy flow vs nutrient cycle

A

energy flows between biotic components of ecosystem, nutrient cycle is between abiotic and biotic (from 1 organism to another or from 1 part of the ecosystem to another)

nutrients is said to be cycled beause unlike energy it doesnt get lost during its transfer

Q

nitrogen cycle

A

N2 part of proteins, nucleic acid, chlorophyll, but plants can use N2 directly, must be converted to NH3

Steps to nitrogen cycle
1- Nitrogen fixation (N2=NH3), done by bacteria and at the root of certain plants (symbiotic relationship)
2-Nitrification (NH3=NO3-) done by bacteria and archaeans
3- assimilation, nitrogen into proteins and dna
4-ammonification:bacteria and fungi convert organic nitrohen of dead rganisms into NH3
5-denitrification: conversion of NO3- into N2 which returns to atmosphere

remeberthat bateria are present in almost all the steps and nitrogen fixation

Q

phosphorous cycle

A

found in nucleic acis, phospholipids and atp
erodes from rock as inorganic phosphote (PO4), absorbed by plant roots
animals get phosphorus needed from diet, decmposers release PO4 into environment
