Nutrient Flashcards
What are the classifications of nutrients
Macronutrients and micronutrients
What is the composition of protein
Carbon,hydrogen,oxygen and nitrogen
What does the elements of protein make up
Amino acids
What are amino acids
Is a protein we must get from food because we cannot make it
Digestion
When we eat food and break it down so that it can be used in the body
What happens to amino acids when they are digested
When they are broken down it releases each amino acid so that it can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
What are the two groups of protein
High biological value (HBV) these are proteins that contain all of the essential amino acids needed by the body and usually come from animal sources e.g. meat and low biological value (LBV) these are proteins that do not contain many essential amino acids and usually come from plant sources e.g. cereal
What jobs does protein have in the body?
It helps with the growth of body cells and the repair of damaged or worn out cells e.g. cuts. It also helps with the production of hormones , enzymes and antibodies which are required to keep the body healthy. The excess is used for heat and energy.
