Nursing research and evidence based practice Flashcards
What is nursing research?
a systematic examination of phenomena important to the nursing discipline, as well as to nurses, their patients and families
What are the goals of nursing research?
expand knowledge base
develops new knowledge
answer questions
tests theories
encourage multidisciplinary approach
improves education/practice
demonstrates accountability/professionalism
Define evidence based practice.
integration of the most informative research evidence with evidence from expert clinical practice and other sources to produce the best possible care for clients
What are the goals of evidence based practice?
inform nurses of current evidence
integrates knowledge from various sources
brings nursing research to the practice
guides decision making in practice
promotes use of guidelines/standards
ensures nursing care is relevant and current
What are the steps to evidence based practice?
- ask a question
- identify/gather relevant evidence
- critically appraise the evidence
- integrate all sources of evidence (even ones that contradict)
- make a practice decision/change
- evaluate the outcome
What are the 4 questions that should be asked when developing evidence based practice?
PICO
P: what is the population
I: what is the intervention
C: comparison of interest (computer charting vs paper charting)
O: what is the desired outcome
What are the sources of nursing knowledge?
EMPIRICS: the science of nursing
ESTHETICS: the art of nursing
PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE: experience/intuition
ETHICS: morals/values
EMANCIPATORY KNOWING: social, political, economic
What are the two approaches to research?
QUANTITATIVE
QUALITATIVE
describe quantitative research
scientific approach
one reality: seeks to determine cause/effect
focuses on a research question/hypothesis
collects data from a sample that represents the population
Describe qualitative research
interpretive approach
multiple realities: seeks to understand human experiences
focuses on participants’ point of view
collects data to shed light on themes within experience
subject must be selected randomly to avoid biases
What is the nurses role in research?
being current and relevant
evaluating and providing feedback
learning
different roles at different levels of nursing
What are some barriers of evidence based practice?
absence of research to a specific problem
lack of experience in critiquing literature
lack of time
lack of funding
lack of clinical resources
fear of change and lack of motivation
What can we do to address barriers to evidence based practice?
Challenge the status quo
encourage culture of change
never stop asking questions
recognize the importance of EBP
use your fresh ideas
stay up to date on literature
find your niche/passion in nursing
