What does exploring mean in the context of communication?
it is the navigation through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it.
What are the two types of exploring?
planned
spontaneous
What is planned exploration?
purposeful attempt to obtain information directed by the nurse to meat a goal
How do you go about planned exploration?
begin with open ended questions and then lead into narrower questions to drive at what is wanted
What is spontaneous exploration?
It is directed/controlled by the patient
Nurse picks up cues from the patient and digs deeper
What is the primary thing a nurse does during spontaneous exploration?
gives indirect messages:
demonstration of messaging and understanding, but not direction
What are the three communication strategies used in exploring?
prompting
probing
cues/inferences
What is prompting in exploration?
encourages patient to elaborate on partially expressed ideas
What are the three ways of prompting in exploration?
MINIMAL PROMPT: nodding head, mmhmm
ACCENT: using tone to show you are listening
OPEN-ENDED STATEMENTS: not asking questions, but statements that bait a response
What is probing in exploration?
ways of questioning, two ways
Open-ended
Closed ended
What are cues/inferences in exploration?
CUES: small amount of information that represents a larger issue (hard, concrete, objective data not what they are saying)
INFERENCES: drawing conclusions based on cues

Leading questions

What is the nurse patient interview?
Conversation with a purpose/goal used in patient assessments
What is the purpose of the nurse-patient interview?
obtain a nursing health history
identify needs/risk factors
determines changes in patient’s wellness
What are the objectives of the nurse-patient interview?
tasks that we need to accomplish to meet the purpose
