Nucleic Acids (Unit 1) Flashcards
Nucliec Acids
Assembly Instructions for all proteins in a living organism. Polymer made of nucleotides
Types of Nucleic Acid
DNA and RNA
DNA
Stores genetic hereditary information for all living thins. Encodes AA sequences for proteins
RNA
Participates in synthesis of reactions and is genetic hereditary molecule for viruses
Nucleotide parts
Nitrogenous base (rings of C and N), Sugar (5 carbon ring sugar), Phosphate group. Phosphate connects to sugar at 5C, Nitrogenous base connects to sugar at 1C
Backbone of nucleic acid molecule
Sugar and phosphate
DNA and RNA
Polymers of nucleotides held together by phosphodiester bonds (condensation reaction between hydroxyl on sugar and hydroxyl of phosphate)
DNA Nucleotides contain
phosphate group, deoxyribose sugar, and nitrogenous bases thymine, adenine, guanine, and cytosine
DNA is double or single stranded?
Double, and antiparallel. H bonds form between bases of opposite strands
Adenine bonds with?
Thymine. 2H bonds
Cytosine bonds with?
Guanine. 3H bonds
RNA nucleotides contain
phosphate group, ribose sugar, and bases adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil
RNA is single or double stranded?
single
Structures of RNA
mRNA - short linear chains
tRNA - cloverleaf formation
Other functions of nucleotides
ATP and GTP to transport chemical energy from one reaction to another
