Nuclear Flashcards
Quarks
protons and neutrons made up of smaller particles are called this
(tiny particles that make up protons and neutrons)
What are the 2 forces in the nucleus
Strong and weak
As the nucleus gets bigger… the weak force ______
pulls the nucleus apart rather than holds it together
Strong vs weak forces
strong- holds nucleus together, works over really small distances
weak- repulsive force that pushes quarks apart, stronger at larger distances
Alpha decay, what do you do?
add helium 4/2 and change the element by subtracting helium
ex. alpha decay of 60/28 Ni
-> 4/2 He + 56/26 Fe
ex. beta decay of 32/15 P
-> 0/-1 e + 0/0 V + 32/16 S
Beta decay, what do you do?
add electron, anti neutrino, and subtract 1 from atomic number to change element
ex. alpha decay of 26/13 Al
-> 4/2 He + 22/11 Na
Whats a half life
amount of time it takes for exactly half of a substance to decay
Fission vs Fusion
Fusion- nuclear reaction where 2 or more atomic nuclei collide and are joined to form a heavier element
Fission- nuclear reaction where many different nuclei are produced because of chain reactions caused by extra neutrons
Power plants, explain how they relate to nuclear energy
In a nuclear-fueled power plant, water is turned into steam, which in turn drives turbine generators to produce electricity. The difference is the source of heat. At nuclear power plants, the heat to make the steam is created when uranium atoms split - called fission
Barium 122 half life = 2 min fresh sample = 80q 10 min to set up the experiment how much barium 122 will be left when the experiment begins?
A=80(2)^ -10/2
2.5g
80g iodine 131
t= 60 days
half life= 8 days
80(2)^ -60/8
10mg iodine 131 how much is left after 24 days?
half life= 8 days
10(2)^ -24/8
1.25mg
