Q

Strong vs weak forces

A

strong- holds nucleus together, works over really small distances
weak- repulsive force that pushes quarks apart, stronger at larger distances

Q

Fission vs Fusion

A

Fusion- nuclear reaction where 2 or more atomic nuclei collide and are joined to form a heavier element
Fission- nuclear reaction where many different nuclei are produced because of chain reactions caused by extra neutrons

Q

Power plants, explain how they relate to nuclear energy

A

In a nuclear-fueled power plant, water is turned into steam, which in turn drives turbine generators to produce electricity. The difference is the source of heat. At nuclear power plants, the heat to make the steam is created when uranium atoms split - called fission
