Bonding Flashcards
Molecule
Smallest unit of a substance that has all the properties of that element
Both (different or same atoms) are molecules
Covelant
What is it between?
Between a nonmetal & nonmetal
2 or more atoms of the same element (not considered a compound)
2 or more different atoms (compound)
How is something a covalent bond?
Sharing of electrons by overlapping orbitals, therefore, doesn’t conduct electricity
BECAUSE NONMETAL
Ionic
Between?
Between metal ion and nonmetal ion
2 or more ions form a compound
Form crystals/lattice NOT molecules
Ionic
Cation vs anion
Cation-positive
Anion-negative
Do ionic bonds conduct electricity?
Yes, conduct electricity when dissolved
Metallic
Between?
What do they form?
Conductors?
Metal bonding with metal Form alloys or metallic solids "Sea of electrons"- share freely Conductors, shapeable (Electrons are always moving/electricity)
Covalent
3 important things to know
- sharing of valence electrons
- nonmetal & nonmetal
- compounds can arrange multiple ways
Ionic bonds
How many formations?
Why are they attracted?
How are they created?
Create ions with most common charge
Stay together due to electrical attraction and neutralization (positive metal cation with negative nonmetal anion)
1 set formation
Naming rules- ionic vs covalent
Prefixes?
Why are they used?
Covalent- prefixes used because they can form in multiple arrangements
Ionic- only one possible arrangement, no prefixes
Used to indicate how many of each atom are present in 1 molecule
Prefix 1 for covalent
Mono
Prefix 2 for covalent
Di
Prefix 3 for covalent
Tri
Prefix 4 for covalent
Tetra
Prefix 5 for covalent
Penta
