Intro, sig figs, and the metric system Flashcards
What is SI
international system of units (metric system)
length is measured in what?
meters (m)
mass is measured in what?
grams (g)
Volume is measured in what?
liters (L)
what is mass?
how much matter is in an object
what is volume?
how much space something occupies
what is density?
how much stuff is in this space
What is accuracy?
how close you are to a real value based on your equipment (equipment’s fault)
what is precision?
how good you are at using the equipment (your fault)
breaker vs graduated cylinder
beaker is used for stirring, but isnt accurate with mL
grad. cylinder is not used for stirring, but accurate with mL
the smaller equipment you use, the more ______
accuracy
what does the metric system consist of ?
kilo 1000 hecta 100 deca 10 base 1 deci .1 centi .01 milli .001
what is chemistry?
the study of matter and its interactions
what is the most basic substance?
element
what are elements made of?
atoms
what is the order that matte is characterized of?
elements -> atoms -> protons, neutrons, electrons
scientific method
observe hypothesize predict experiment analyze compare data
what do experiments need?
good methods and variables
control
nothing is changed, everything is the same except for changing variable
what is under the experimental group?
independent- YOU change
dependent- depends on what changes you made, measured, based on changes
law vs theory?
law- statement of observation
theory- explanation of a law
what makes up atoms?
protons, neutrons, and electrons
how are different elements made?
made of atoms w/ different combinations of protons, neutrons, and electrons
when adding or subtracting numbers from sig figs
answer cannot contain more places after the decimal point than the smallest number of decimal
(find the smallest decimal in the problem, the answer can only go to that place)
when multiplying or dividing from sig figs
answer cannot contain more significant figures than the number being multiplied or divided with the least number of sig figs.
(find the number in the problem with the least number of sig figs, the answer cannot contain more sig figs than that)
