NTD Flashcards
why do u get NTD? different types?
• Result from failure of the neutral tube to close
• Failure can occur caudally or cranially
• Cranial defect results in anencephaly
• Caudal defect results in spina bifida
Anencephaly
failure of neural tube to close cranially
Absence of cranial structures, including brain
Incompatible with life!!!!!!
Rachischisis
Failure of neural fold elevation, neural tube does not form at ALL! so theres no formation of the neuroectoderm!
(somtimes known as complete spina bifida) refers to a severe form of spina bifida where there is a cleft through the entire spine.
neural tube defect is an OPEN defect, what can this mean?
embrynic protein can leak into amniotic fluid and into circulation
NTD: diagnosis & prevention & causes
measure for maternal serum a-fetoprotein
ultrasound
Causes: environmental, genetic, diet
give them FOLIC ACID!
(Folic acid pre-conceptually (3 mo) and for the 1st trimester reduces incidence by 70% )
what is the best known factor influencing NTD risk?
diminished folate
what baby defect is also associated with folate deficiency ?
Cleft palate is also associated with folate deficiency. During baby checks, always make sure the baby is feeding normally and examine the palate for defects
