NSAIDs Flashcards
What does NSAIDs stand for?
Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
What are NSAIDs used for and name four uses?
Reduce inflammatory response and provide pain relief.
- acute or chronic rheumatoid arthritis
- osteoarthritis
- ankylosing spondylitis
- other rheumatic diseases
- mild to moderate pain
- gout
- fever
- non-rheumatic inflammation
- dysmenorrhea
Name five adverse affects of NSAIDs.
- gastrointestinal disturbances
- renal damage
- asthma attacks
- bronchospasm, dyspnoea
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- headaches
- skin reactions (rash, urticaria)
- arrhythmias
- tinnitus (ring in the ears)
Aspirin is the earliest NSAID and an anticoagulant. True or false.
False. Yes, aspirin is on of the earliest NSAIDs but it is not an anticoagulant.
What are the adverse drug reactions of aspirin?
- nausea
- vomiting
- gastric ulceration
- bleeding
- hypersensitivity
Name the interactions of aspirin.
Multiple interactions, but most significant is interactions with warfarin and other NSAIDs. Should be avoided in pregnancy and during breast feeding.
Name two properties of aspirin.
- analgesic
- anti-inflammatory
- antipyretic
- anti-platelet
What is Reye’s syndrome?
Form of encephalopathy and liver damage arising when aspirin is used in viral-type conditions in children, which can be fatal. It may cause permanent brain damage.
When does the peak serum levels occur after taking aspirin?
20-40 minutes later.
When is paracetamol used?
- mild to moderate pain
- fever
- headache
- osteoarthritis
What are the peak serum levels of paracetamol?
15-60 minutes and half life of 1-3 hours
What occurs through overdosage of paracetamol?
Irreversible liver and kidney damage, hypoglycaemia.
What does paracetamol inhibit and it’s effect?
Inhibits prostaglandin, but has no anti-inflammatory effect. Other effects include analgesic and antipyretic.
Whom is it important to avoid NSAIDs in late pregnancy?
It may increase the risk of bleeding and prolong labour.
What are the effects of opioids on the foetus?
Can cause physical drug dependence, resulting in severe withdrawal, as well as respiratory depression.
