  • determine if the scene/situation is safe

3rd step Primary Assessment

A
  • verbalize general impression of the patient
  • determine responsiveness/LOC
  • determine chief complaints/ life threats
  • Airway
    • opens and assesses airway
    • inserts appropriate sized adjunct or verbalizes that the pt does not need one
  • Breathing
    • assess breathing
    • assess ventilation
    • administer oxygen
    • manage any injury that may compromise breathing/ ventilation
  • Circulation
    • checks pulse
    • assesses skin (color, temp, condition)
    • assesses for and controls any major bleeding if present
    • initiates shock management

Identifies priority of pt and makes transport decision based upon calculated GCS
