otoscope w/ short, wide-tipped nasal speculum
penlight
2 tongue blades

How is the patency of nostrils tested?
Have the patient block one nostril and inhale through the other, then switch sides. Listen for congestion/patency in nares

NOSE:
Inspect external nose for symmetry, deformity, lesions
Palpate: test patency of each nostril
Inspect: w/ nasal speculum the nasal mucosa, septum, turbinates
Palpate: sinus area
List the summary checklist for a mouth/throat examination
MOUTH/THROAT:
Inspect: w/ penlight: mouth, teeth, gums, buccal mucosa, palate, tonsils, pharyngeal wall
Palpate:
for adults: bimanual palpation of mouth
for neonate: palpate for integrity of palate and assess sucking reflex
